Síntesis del Episodio

The hermitage is located on the Peña Sacra, panoramicly dominating La Pedriza. The masonry construction is from the 16th century, the nave measuring 10 X 6 meters although its construction began in the 15th century. Later dependencies were attached to it in the 17th century. The Virgen de la Peña Sacra is a modern copy of the 19th century image that disappeared during the Spanish civil war with the exception of the Child, who is old. There are different writings that link the Peña la Sacra with druid cults, Celtic priests who in the first millennium of our era celebrated their rites in the woods.
In 1769, during the celebration of its festivity, control of the candles that surrounded the Virgin in the Church was lost and everything was set on fire, saving only the sacristy and leaving the church without a tower, roof, or sacred images. The Virgin herself was also burned. Likewise, Bernaldo de Quirós tells, narrating the events that the former innkeeper of Manzanares described to him in his day, that the hermitage was attacked by the bandits who populated the area, being bravely defended by the Guardesa de Peña Sacra. The virgin, still enjoying great devotion in the town, is not her patron saint, this being Our Lady of the Snows.
