Chapter 43: The Night They Wept for Their Dead
Description
The most heartbreaking story in the series: the last night of Calatayud’s Jewish community before the 1492 exile. On July 25th, about a thousand souls gathered in the Jewish cemetery to bid farewell for the last time to their ancestors before undertaking the journey of no return to Tortosa.
An emotional and deeply human episode that narrates the final moments of eight centuries of Jewish presence in Calatayud. From the tears of Selemon Ezi beside his father’s tomb, to the fulfilled prophecy of keys that would return 500 years later from Tel Aviv.
We’ll hear the voices of entire families: the butcher Simuel Conejo placing his grandmother’s kneading trough on a tomb, the shoemaker Yuce Molho keeping the keys to his workshop, Rabbi Isaac Arama reciting Kaddish for a living community that was dying. Also the voices of Christians who wept for their neighbors’ departure, like Johan Olmas returning a loan to the rabbi.
The episode follows the procession of pain through Calatayud’s streets, the road to Tortosa, the arrival at L’Ampolla port, and the final moment when ships move away from the coasts of the Crown of Aragon, taking forever the last Jews of our “Little Jerusalem”.
A masterful narration based on rigorous historical documentation, capturing the birth of eternal Sephardic nostalgia and the echo that still resonates in the stones of Calatayud’s Jewish quarter.
Duration: 45-50 minutesNarrator: Rabbi Yehudá ben Shlomó AlbilbilíDirection and production: Javier Bona
