BERESHIT
As is known, the children of Israel are required to fulfill six hundred and thirteen commandments (Tariag Mitzvot), of which two hundred and forty-eight are commandments to do and three hundred and sixty-five are commandments not to do. These actions aim to promote both the development and improvement of the individual and the world in general. The six hundred and thirteen mitzvot are distributed throughout the five books of the Chumash. Everyone who is under the covenant is obligated to fulfill these commandments (those within their reach and those currently in force), as follows: Bereshit has three mitzvot; Exodus one hundred eleven mitzvot; Leviticus two hundred and forty-seven mitzvot; Numbers fifty two mitzvot; and Deuteronomy two hundred mitzvot. The first Parashah of the Chumash (known as the Pentateuch), which bears the same name as the first book of the Torah, Bereshit, is one of the longest portions, not only in its length but also in the period of time it covers, as it spans from the Creation of the world to Noah, encompassing one thousand six hundred years (ten generations). In this Parashah, we find the first mitzvah: “Be fruitful and multiply.”
