Jaime Caruana is currently an Independent Director of BBVA. From 2009 to 2017 he was General Director of the Bank for International Settlements.
Previously, he was Director of the Department of Monetary and Capital Markets, and Financial Advisor to the Director General of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Between 2000 and 2006, he held the position of Governor of the Bank of Spain and as such was a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank. Furthermore, between 2003 and 2006 he was Chairman of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and since 2003 he is a member of the Financial Stability Board (FSB).
Before joining the Bank of Spain, he worked in the financial sector for ten years. He is also a member of the Group of Thirty.
