1 In those days John the Baptist came,preaching in the Desert of Judea2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom ofheaven is near."3 This is he who was spoken of throughthe prophet Isaiah: "A voice of onecalling in the desert, 'Prepare the wayfor the Lord, make straight paths forhim.' "4 John's clothes were made of camel'shair, and he had a leather belt aroundhis waist. His food was locusts and wildhoney.5 People went out to him from Jerusalemand all Judea and the whole region ofthe Jordan.6 Confessing their sins, they werebaptized by him in the Jordan River.7 But when he saw many of thePharisees and Sadducees coming towhere he was baptizing, he said tothem: "You brood of vipers! Who warnedyou to flee from the coming wrath?8 Produce fruit in keeping withrepentance.9 And do not think you can say toyourselves, 'We have Abraham as ourfather.' I tell you that out of these stonesGod can raise up children for Abraham.10 The ax is already at the root of thetrees, and every tree that does notproduce good fruit will be cut down andthrown into the fire.11 "I baptize you with water forrepentance. But after me will come onewho is more powerful than I, whosesandals I am not fit to carry. He willbaptize you with the Holy Spirit and withfire.12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, andhe will clear his threshing floor,gathering his wheat into the barn andburning up the chaff with unquenchablefire."13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to theJordan to be baptized by John.14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "Ineed to be baptized by you, and do youcome to me?"15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it isproper for us to do this to fulfill allrighteousness." Then John consented.16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, hewent up out of the water. At thatmoment heaven was opened, and hesaw the Spirit of God descending like adove and lighting on him.17 And a voice from heaven said, "This ismy Son, whom I love; with him I am wellpleased."
